La Ceiba, the City

History

The first settlers who inhabited the region were mostly Tolupanes, an indigenous people of Honduras. In the nineteenth century, a large proportion of people living in the region were concentrated in the activity of banana crops. The city name comes from a very large ceiba tree that stood on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. The size of this tree has probably impressed the first settlers arrived on the island of St. Vincent. There were so many ceiba trees that settlers have become used to name the place "La Ceiba".

The city has developed its port in 1872 with the booming trade in bananas. The trade of this fruit then drew giants North Amércains who have set up plants of banana. Currently, La Ceiba is the third largest city in the country and the second largest port. There are approximately 250 000 inhabitants in the city. In addition, the city has the highest literacy rate in Honduras.
